The Canada Media Fund (CMF) and Telefilm Canada have expressed their support of the recently announced measures to direct emergency funding\u00a0to Canada\u2019s screen-based industries.<\/p>\n
Following Prime Minister Trudeau\u2019s previous announcement of C$500 million ($356.8 million) to establish a COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund for Cultural, Heritage and Sport Organizations, the Government of Canada will contribute C$88.8 million ($63.4 million) to the CMF and C$27 million ($19.3 million) to Telefilm to administer funds that mitigate the impact of the pandemic on Canada\u2019s production sector.<\/p>\n
The CMF and Telefilm are also responding to the COVID-19 crisis by participating in an industry-wide task force assembled to assess the impact of the pandemic on the sector.<\/p>\n
Valerie Creighton, president and CEO of the Canada Media Fund, said: \u201cScreen-based industries generate C$12.8 billion to Canada’s GDP and provide 181,000 well-paid jobs. The sector has been hugely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Between mid-March and June 30, the impact of shutdowns are an estimated production loss of C$2.5 billion and 177,000 jobs. The emergency funding announced by the federal government is part of a multifaceted funding ecosystem and will be allocated in a way which complements\u2014not duplicates\u2014other measures for which screen industry workers and companies are eligible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Christa Dickenson, executive director at Telefilm Canada, added: \u201cThese new funds will help companies in Canada\u2019s film, television and interactive digital media sectors keep their doors open and keep their employees on the payroll. Throughout this period of confinement and physical distancing, we have seen companies explore creative ways to continue developing, collaborating, distributing and promoting screen-based content. As the administrator of the CMF\u2019s programs and the Canada Feature Film Fund, Telefilm will continue to work effectively and efficiently to ensure that this additional support is disbursed quickly.
