Video Interview: Ken DuBow

NEW YORK: Ken DuBow, the president of Opus Distribution, talks to World Screen about maintaining a lean operation in order to invest in quality programming.

It was during one of the most difficult economic times in history that Ken DuBow decided to launch Opus Distribution. Less than two years old, the company made its debut at MIPCOM 2009 with four new projects for the international market. DuBow, a veteran of the TV-movie business, said he saw an opening in the international market for "intelligently budgeted movies" that had compelling stories and solid casts and just needed a marketing boost behind them. DuBow adopted a business model with low overhead costs and focused instead on using the money for quality product for the catalogue. The company honed in on supplying telefilms with strong female protagonists, setting up its Dangerous Women Collection under the tagline "Our women are always having a bad day." The catalogue has diversified and Opus is continuing to find success in a range of genres from the TV-movie arena, both in the U.S. and international markets.
