LONDON: ITN Productions has named Michael Welsh, a former producer for National Geographic, as the company’s VP of production and development for North American operations.

In his new position, Welsh will be based in Washington, D.C. His appointment is meant to expand ITN’s presence in the U.S. and build on its recent commissions from U.S. broadcasters, including Children of Syria for PBS and Triumph Games for CBS Sports Network.

Welsh, who has more than two decades of industry experience, previously served as executive producer of production and development for the Nat Geo family of global networks. During that time, he contributed to Alaska State Troopers and Drugs Inc., among other productions. Earlier in his career, he was a writer, producer and showrunner, and worked on such series as Hopkins 24/7, MythBusters, Forensic Files and Trauma: Life in the E.R.

Ian Russell, the head of international programming at ITN Productions, stated: “We are delighted to have Mike on board at ITN Productions. He has a rare combination of fantastic program-making skills and a natural instinct for development. In the short time we have worked together he has already had a big impact on our U.S. and global output.”

Welsh added: “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to join the ITN Productions team and look forward to continuing to build on their portfolio of high-rated and award-winning programming here in the U.S. market.”
