Freshman Shows Win Big at the Golden Globes

LOS ANGELES: A number of first-season shows were honored at last night’s Golden Globes, including Homeland, which picked up the award for best TV drama. 

The psychological thriller Homeland won for best drama, while its lead, Claire Danes, won for best actress. Kelsey Grammer won in the actor category for his role in the new Starz original Boss. Absent this year was Mad Men, which previously took home the Golden Globe in the TV drama category for three consecutive years. 

Modern Family was the only repeat winner, nabbing the best TV comedy for the second consecutive year. Laura Dern took the win for comedic actress for Enlightened, while Matt LeBlanc won on the male side for Episodes

Downton Abbey was named best mini-series or motion picture made for television. Kate Winslet won in the performance category for Mildred Pierce and Idris Elba for Luther

Supporting wins went to Jessica Lange for American Horror Story and Peter Dinklage for Game of Thrones

The Descendants was awarded top honors as best motion picture, with George Clooney also taking the win in the performance category. For best female lead in a drama, Meryl Streep was recognized for Iron Lady

The Artist won in a number of categories, including best motion picture comedy or musical. The film’s male lead, Jean Dujardin, also won last night. On the female side, Michelle Williams took home the award for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn. 

Iran’s A Separation was the winner for best foreign language film. The Adventures of Tintin won in the animated feature film category.
