International Emmy Awards News & Current Affairs Nominees Unveiled

NEW YORK: The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has revealed the nominees for the 2016 news and current affairs categories, with Al Jazeera English and TV Globo scoring nods in both areas.

“In this volatile world where anybody can comment on serious world events on social media platforms, true journalistic voices and investigations are more crucial than ever,” said Bruce L. Paisner, the president and CEO of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. “We salute the 2016 nominees for their outstanding broadcast journalism.”

In the news category, Al Jazeera English News (Qatar) was nominated for Nepal Earthquake Coverage—Nepal Earthquake and Its Aftermath. Al Jazeera English (Malaysia) was also recognized in the current affairs category for 101 East—Afghanistan: No Country for Women. Brazil’s TV Globo is in the running for Jornal Nacional and Fantastico—Microcephaly/Zika in the news category, while GloboNews Documentário—Syria on the Run was recognized in the current affairs space.

Other nominees in the news category are the U.K.’s Sky News for Migration Crisis and RT of Russia for RT News—UNGA: Special Coverage. In the current affairs arena, the U.K.’s ITN, Ronachan Films, Evan Williams Productions and Mediadante got the nod for Dispatches: Escape from ISIS. Germany’s ARD/NDR was nominated for Reportage im Ersten—Long Thanh Will Lachen (Long Thanh Wants to Smile).

The winners will be announced on September 21 during a ceremony at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall in New York.
