BBC Worldwide has licensed more than 400 hours of programming across Africa, including the distributor’s first agreement with the new SVOD platform iflix.

Iflix snapped up 150-plus hours of British content ahead of its upcoming launch in sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa), including classic Top Gear, Citizen Khan and Luther. More than 250 hours of scripted and factual series are headed to such mobile operators as VodaCom and MTN. The hit dramas Wolf Hall and Doctor Who are part of a deal that spans 11 African territories, including Nigeria and South Africa.

Joel Churcher, the VP and general manager for Africa at BBC Worldwide, remarked: “It’s a really exciting time to be doing business in Africa. The demand for premium British content and formats across the African continent is vast and is why we have partnered with local companies like Rapid Blue. We want to ensure that at BBC Worldwide, we not only distribute the very best but we also create and support the very best local content to ensure that Africa stays front of mind globally in broadcasting.”
