SAN FRANCISCO: The international OTT service Viki is making a major push in Latin America, where it is launching a Spanish-language site.

Viki’s viewership has tripled in the last year in Latin America, a territory that now accounts for more than a quarter of its global audience. To support the rapid growth in this region, Viki is launching a dedicated Spanish-language site at viki.mx.

Additionally, the company has a new telenovela genre, which will feature shows from Caracol and Venevision International.

As part of its global expansion efforts, Viki has extended its distribution deal with Netflix to include a selection of Asian TV shows and movies for the Latin American region with subtitles in Spanish and Portuguese.

There are plans to launch other localized versions of its site worldwide in the coming months.

“Our goal has always been to bring global TV to global audiences,” said Tammy H. Nam, Viki’s CMO and general manager for the Americas. “More than 90 percent of our Latin American viewers come to Viki to watch top international TV shows and movies, which they can’t easily access elsewhere. Now, we’re able to introduce ‘Telenovelas’ to much of the world.”
