Details Revealed for Disney’s New High School Musical Series

Casting has begun for High School Musical: The Musical, a new show that is in development for Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming service.

High School Musical: The Musical puts a new spin on the Emmy-winning franchise. Directed by Julie Ashton and filmed docu-style, the 10-part series will follow a group of students at East High as they stage a theatrical performance of High School Musical. It is being executive produced by Tim Federle (Ferdinand) and Oliver Goldstick (Pretty Little Liars).

Among the characters being cast are Ricky, which Disney describes as “a snarky sweetheart, a B-minus student, and our star;” Nini, the other star; E.J., Nini’s new love interest; Ashlyn, a horoscope reader and aspiring songwriter; Big Red, “Ricky’s lifelong wingman;” Gina, “an entitled princess;” Vikram, captain of the color guard and student choreographer; and Miss Jenn, the school’s new drama teacher.
