Studio Hamburg-owned Letterbox Filmproduction has licensed the rights for a German remake of the Sagafilm cult comedy The Nightshift, which is being adapted for ZDFneo.

The Nightshift was a hit for Channel 2 in Iceland when it debuted back in 2007. The original Icelandic version also aired on BBC Four in the U.K. and was remade for TV2 in Norway by Monster Scripted.

The German remake, Tanken: mehr als Super, is currently filming in Hamburg. The 12-episode series takes place during night shifts at a quiet gas station.

Tanken: mehr als Super perfectly suits ZDFneo’s growing comedy portfolio,” said Dr. Simone Emmelius, general manager of ZDFneo.“I’m confident that, with its special humor and the unique approach to its characters, the series will appeal to our young target audience—online and in our linear TV program.”

“It’ s a very special feeling bringing The Nightshift to such a mature TV market, if the success of the series in its local market can be replicated here in Germany it will be very special indeed,” said Kjartan Thor Thordarson, executive producer and CEO of Sagafilm Nordic, which brokered the deal. “We are extremely excited to watch the epic characters from The Nightshift come alive in Tanken when the show premieres on ZDFneo.”
