SÃO PAULO: Mediaset España has signed on as co-producer of Globo’s first original production for the international market, the drama thriller Supermax.

Additionally, Mediaset España will broadcast the series in Spain on Canal Cuatro. The group joins a roster of co-producers that includes Mexico’s TV Azteca, Argentina’s Televisión Publica de Argentina (TVP) and Oficina Burman, which is owned by Argentine filmmaker and series director Daniel Burman. Production on the scripted series began last month at Globo Studios in Rio de Janeiro.

The drama takes place in an abandoned maximum-security prison that becomes the set for a major reality TV show, where eight participants will compete for a cash prize.

Raphael Corrêa Netto, Globo’s executive director of international business, said: “We have two strategic goals with this project. The first is to reach over 500 million Spanish-speaking viewers with a product specifically tailored to this audience. The second goal is to expand our relationship with key players in this market, such as our partners TV Azteca, Mediaset España and TVP – Argentina, in addition to promoting creative networking among the talent pool. We will continue to work hard to make sure Supermax is also aired in other countries of the region.”

Manuel Villanueva, the content general director at Mediaset España, remarked: “Through this agreement, we will have the opportunity to take a step forward in our presence in Latin America with Globo, one of the key players in this territory. Supermax reunites conditions that make this series a very attractive [piece of] content, both for its originality and its storytelling and also because of the level of performance and quality of its production. It seems an ideal project to become our first international co-production filmed in Spanish.”

Rodrigo Fernandez Capdevielle, the general director at Estudio 7/TV Azteca, added: “At TV Azteca we have set a goal: to be one of the best Latin America producers with high-quality content, which turn into more viewers for each of our screens. That is why today, with the key content specialists such as Globo, we are on the right path. Together, we hope to start and continue this relationship to bring to Mexican and global audiences interesting content and great production, as Supermax is going to be.”
