Sony Pictures Television Networks has ordered a new detective procedural, Carter, starring Jerry O’Connell and Sydney Poitier, for its global channels, including AXN.

“Our channels are hungry for easy-to-watch, easy-to-program procedurals, and Carter more than fills that void,” said Marie Jacobson, the executive VP of programming and production for Sony Pictures Television Networks. “It delivers both star power and self-contained crime stories with a comedic edge. The scripts are smart and charming, and Jerry and Sydney are great together. We love this show for our channels.”

Andy Kaplan, the president of Sony Pictures Television Networks, added, “Strong original programming is key to differentiating our networks around the world, and during this time of rapid change in the industry, it also gives us greater flexibility in developing new advertising and distribution models.”

The ten-episode series was written and created by Garry Campbell and developed with writer John Tinker. It is being produced by Amaze Film + Television, which will handle Canadian distribution while Sony Pictures Television represents all other international sales.

O’Connell plays Harley Mackay, a detective on a hit American TV show who is forced to return to his sleepy hometown after an embarrassing public meltdown in Hollywood. He uses his acting experience to become a real detective, partnering with friend and police veteran Sam St. Clair (Poitier).

Carter is SPT’s second global original announced this year; Absentia premieres this fall.
