The new series Stella Blómkvist, an Icelandic TV drama based on a best-selling book series, is to join the slate of originals on Viaplay.

Stella Blómkvist was pitched at Series Mania 2016 a year ago and is distributed by Red Arrow International, which co-developed the series and will launch the show to the international market at MIPCOM 2017. Produced by Sagafilm, Stella Blómkvist is the first Icelandic series to be a Viaplay Original. Heida Reed, known for her role in the BBC drama Poldark, stars in the lead role as Stella Blómkvist.

Filming has already begun on the 6×45-minute and 3×90-minute series. The mysterious author who writes under the pseudonym Stella Blómkvist has been able to remain anonymous since the books were first released some 20 years ago.

Hilmar Sigurdsson, the CEO of Sagafilm in Iceland, said: “It’s exciting to be a part of building the slate of Viaplay originals with Stella Blómkvist. The series is Sagafilm’s most ambitious project to date and we are thrilled to have Viaplay as our Scandinavian partner on the project along with Siminn, our local broadcaster in Iceland.”
